JACK KEROUAC LIVED HERE IN SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA IN 1953

I had heard his name in the past but never really knew much about him.  Several years ago I came across a blog and bookmarked it to return to over and over and read a little more of what he wrote and journaled about.  I loved what I read and always wanted to know more about him.  Then after visiting San Luis Obispo for many years and even walking by this place, I never knew this was where he lived for awhile.  I remember only seeing this building from the front and even have a photo of the front porch.

Here is an article I looked up after my sister told me he lived here in this boarding house.  LINK TO ARTICLE

I love his writing that I posted below the pic.

"THE GOLDEN ETERNITY"

I  have lots of things to share now, in case we ever meet, concerning the message that was transmitted to me under a pine tree in North Carolina on a cold winter moonlit night. It said that Nothing Ever Happened, so don’t worry. It’s all like a dream. Everything is ecstasy, inside. We just don’t know it because of our thinking-minds. But in our true blissful essence of mind is known that everything is alright forever and forever and forever. Close your eyes, let your hands and nerve-ends drop, stop breathing for 3 seconds, listen to the silence inside the illusion of the world, and you will remember the lesson you forgot, which was taught in immense milky way soft cloud innumerable worlds long ago and not even at all. It is all one vast awakened thing. I call it the golden eternity. It is perfect.

The world you see is just a movie in your mind.
Rocks dont see it.
Bless and sit down.
Forgive and forget.
Practice kindness all day to everybody
and you will realize you’re already
in heaven now.
That’s the story.
That’s the message.
Nobody understands it,
nobody listens, they’re
all running around like chickens with heads cut
off. I will try to teach it but it will
be in vain, s’why I’ll
end up in a shack
praying and being
cool and singing
by my woodstove
making pancakes.

  1. Sandy, the link you provided took me to the article I had read in the Tribune a while back and that is the only reason I was able to tell you that Kerouc lived in that building for a short time. Rereading it was interesting again. Trying to picture the building being moved on logs and rolled from the Mission area to the site where it sits today so that it might attract visitors from the close-by train station. Imagining him trying to score some dope down by the creek near the mission, etc. A really interesting read!

  2. Interesting to see this building. I studied his book, "On the Road," in one of my literature courses in college.
